The reacting flow and numerical methods group looks into the numerical simulation of turbulent reacting flows and multiphase flow (e.g. spray injection, flash boiling flow) , with a focus on the development of moment-based models (e.g. Conditional Source Term-Estimation) and novel computational methods for post-processing (e.g. CEMA and SPDMD). The fundamental nature of the research entails that the group can easily transfer the knowledge and skills to a wide range of engineering applications including but not limited to combustion engines (IC and aerospace), burner design, hydrogen safety, etc.
Our Vision
The global energy demand is expected to increase significantly by 2040. While significant effort has been devoted to the electrification of ground transportation, for industries that are difficult to electrify (e.g. marine and aviation), novel thermal propulsion systems (TPS) that can significantly reduce carbon footprint are urgently needed. The vision of the group is to establish a world leading research and training centre in thermal propulsion systems (TPS) science and technology. The group will conduct novel combustion research and provide clean energy solutions to achieve a net-zero carbon future. We aim to develop end-use thermal propulsion systems that can safely use varying fuels at lower economic and minimum environmental costs than would be incurred by using conventional fossil fuels. The realization of our research and engineering objectives will have transformational effects on air quality, climate change, energy policy, and infrastructure development, enabling a net-zero carbon future and a sustainable, resilient, and equitable economy.

Current Openings
We are currently searching for highly motivated and dedicated students and post-docs to join the group. Please email Dr Fang if you are interested in joining, and include a description of your research background, a current CV, and a short one-page statement of why you want to study combustion modelling. Due to the large amount of enquiries, only qualified students will be considered. Please do not follow up if you haven't heard back from the group in a week. In particular, we will welcome students and researchers with the following experiences:
-
Have experience in publishing in Combustion Institue Associated Journals
-
Previously worked at Dr Fang's collaborators' Lab
-
Have experience in turbulent combustion model development using OpenFoam
